Angels’ C.J. Wilson gets first win as race team owner

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher and two-time MLB All-Star C.J. Wilson can now call himself a winning team owner in Grand-Am road racing.

C.J. Wilson Racing’s driving tandem of Stevan McAleer and Marc Miller took their No. 5 Mazda MX-5 to a Street Tuner class victory in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series race this weekend at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

It was the inaugural Grand-Am triumph for Wilson’s team, and it proved a fitting end to a weekend of firsts for them; on Friday, former NASCAR racer Chad McCumbee snagged CJWR’s first Grand-Am pole position for the race. On top of that, it was a home win for the team, which is based in Austin.

McAleer was in the No. 5 car when he took the checkered flag, and he won the ST class battle in style by jumping from third to first on the final lap of the race.

“I was getting a little desperate because I was running out of time,” McAleer said afterwards to Grand-Am.com. “On the last lap, the guys were yelling on the radio saying, ‘We’re on the podium, don’t do anything stupid.’ So for me to be up here after winning the race is unbelievable.”
