Group qualifying coming to Sprint Cup road races

NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series road race qualifying procedure has been altered from single-car to group qualifying. That’s been done by the NASCAR Nationwide Series in its road course races in Watkins Glen, Elkhart Lake, Wis. and Montreal, Quebec, but not yet by the flagship Sprint Cup.

Under the new rules, the number of groups and cars in each group will be determined by the number of entrants, with assignments set by fastest practice times. A set time will be determined by the series’ race director and the best lap for each driver will count as their qualifying time.

Sprint Cup has two road races, Sonoma on June 23 and Watkins Glen on August 11.
