Former IZOD IndyCar Series driver Katherine Legge will race the DeltaWing prototype in the American Le Mans Series event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on May 11. Legge tested this past weekend in the DeltaWing at Road Atlanta, and will co-drive the striking machine with fellow Brit Andy Meyrick for the car’s debut on the Monterey, California road course.

In addition to boasting an open-topped look, the DeltaWing runs at half the weight, fuel and horsepower of a normal ALMS prototype, as well as at three-quarters of the tire consumption.

The Ben Bowlby-penned car made its world debut at last year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans and its debut in the ALMS’ LMP1 category last month at the 12 Hours of Sebring, where it was forced to bow out in the second hour due to engine failure.

“It was really exciting to get in the car on Sunday for the first time,” said Legge in a statement about her test at Road Atlanta. “Having driven lots of types of racing cars, I didn’t know what to expect, so I was very pleasantly surprised.

“It braked really well, it turned really positively, and it was really fast in a straight line – it drove like a really good racing car. It was very stable and I also was impressed with the way it handled. It was really neat to get it going.”
