There’s no rest for the wicked in Formula One, but Ferrari are facing a particularly busy lunchtime in Monaco after Felipe Massa suffered a big crash during final practice ahead of qualifying today.
The Brazilian driver crossed the start-finish line with DRS open to start a flying lap, and he appeared to lock up under braking after hitting a bump in the road. Massa’s Ferrari F138 careered into the wall on the left-hand side of the track before running into the barrier at Ste Devote and coming to rest.
Massa’s car was badly damaged, losing its front wing and both front wheels due to the severity of the crash. Thankfully, he managed to walk away from the accident without too much trouble, although reports in the paddock suggest that he may be suffering from a shoulder injury due to the big impact.
Ferrari will now have a big repair job to complete in time for qualifying, with Massa being forced to start P22 should they fail to get him out during Q1. In 2010, Fernando Alonso suffered a similar fate after a crash in FP3, but he managed to recover in the race to finish 6th.
Massa will also incur a five-place grid penalty after changing his gearbox due to the accident.
