Pirelli won’t introduce new tires at next race

Pirelli have abandoned their plans to introduce revised tires at the next round of the world championship at Silverstone.

Teams were given the opportunity to test the new tires during Friday practice. But with rain affecting the first session little running was done on the prototype compounds, which feature changes to the internal belts designed to guard against delaminations.

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery told Autosport: “We are not going to race with the new tire as we did not get much of a chance to test it.”

F1’s official tire supplier requires the unanimous support of the teams to introduce the new tires. As a workaround, Pirelli has proposed using a different glue to bind the tires.

Hembery admitted the decision not to introduce revised tires was “probably not good for some teams that are struggling with the front tire”. However race winner Sebastian Vettel said his criticism of the tires was “not based on performance”:

“I think it was based on safety and I’m sure if you ask other drivers, maybe they weren’t that strong in the press, maybe they think they have an advantage with this sort of tire, but we had some occasions this year where the tire suffered delaminating, the top layer came off for not exactly known reasons, probably debris but you will always have some pieces on the track.”

“Every time I complained about balance or the tires and their behavior, every time as I said as well that on that day there were other people doing a better job and first of all we had to get to their level to start complaining about performance but obviously when you say something, it’s in fashion, these days to take what you like instead of probably publishing the whole answer,” he added.

Hartley’s F1 grid penalty streak continues in Abu Dhabi

Brendon Hartley’s record of receiving a grid penalty at every Formula 1 race he has started is set to continue in Abu Dhabi this weekend after Toro Rosso was forced to change part of his Renault power unit following the last race in Brazil.

Since making his F1 debut at the United States Grand Prix last month, Hartley has faced a grid drop at all three races he has started so far amid ongoing reliability difficulties for power unit supplier Renault.

After being forced to retire from the last race in Brazil two weeks ago due to an engine issue, Hartley has received a 10-place grid penalty for Abu Dhabi after it was confirmed Toro Rosso had changed the MGU-H on his power unit.

Hartley is yet to score any points in F1, having retired from two of his three races so far to make his debut run to P13 in Austin his best result to date.

The Toro Rosso driver finished 20th in FP1 and 19th in FP2 during Friday’s practice sessions in Abu Dhabi as he continued to get to grips with the Yas Marina Circuit.
