Kimi Raikkonen is hoping to end his winless streak at Monza next weekend as the Italian Grand Prix brings the European season to a close.
The Finn has failed to win the race in any of his ten attempts, recording a best finish of second in 2006 during his final season with McLaren. However, he is not bothered by this record heading into the event next weekend.
“It’s true that I have never won in Italy,” Raikkonen admitted. “For one reason or another things just haven’t worked out for me, but it doesn’t mean I can’t drive the track. Just because I have not won at a circuit in the past it doesn’t mean that I won’t win or get a good result there in the future.
“It is true that I have previously had some very competitive weekends there – once or twice I have been close to the win – but something has always gone wrong. Hopefully we will have a real chance to fight for that victory this time.”
Lotus believe that they can challenge for victory at Monza despite failing to impress last time out at the Belgian Grand Prix. Raikkonen retired from the race on lap twenty due to a brake failure that was caused by a tear-off strip from another driver. This retirement also brought to an end his twenty-seven race run of point-scoring finishes, although this does now stand as the all-time record.
