Petit Le Mans flashback: DeltaWing’s wild ride in practice (VIDEO)

A year ago, the controversial and radical DeltaWing made its North American race debut at Petit Le Mans. The race debut nearly didn’t happen because of this accident, when Gunnar Jeannette, driving the then-Nissan DeltaWing collided with a GTC class Porsche Cup car driven by Peter LeSaffre.

Jeannette’s car crested the hill after the Turns 10A/B chicane and dove to LeSaffre’s inside. The unsuspecting Porsche released wide off exit and as he came back on track, made contact with the DeltaWing. That pitched the black car and flipped it over.

The team, comprised of then-Highcroft Racing mechanics, rebuilt the car in order for Jeannette and Lucas Ordonez to race. Race they did, and the car finished an impressive fifth overall as an unclassified entry.

The DeltaWing has taken on new life in 2013 with a new team running the car, a new tire partner in Bridgestone, and most recently, a switch to a closed-top coupe version. Andy Meyrick and Katherine Legge will wheel the car in the team’s home race this Saturday, in a race that marks the sendoff to the American Le Mans Series.

BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) — Daniel Ricciardo says he would relish the challenge of having Lewis Hamilton as his teammate if he joins Mercedes next year.

Ricciardo is out of contract at Red Bull at the end of the season and expressed interest in joining teams like Mercedes or Ferrari to help him challenge for the championship.

The Australian says he would “love to obviously be challenged against the best and Lewis is obviously up there.”

He adds: “I don’t want to say it’s just Lewis I’m looking for but that would be a good challenge.”

Ricciardo says he won’t accept a faster car if it means playing second fiddle to an established star.

He says “there’s always been really good clarity and fairness (at Red Bull) … and I would expect that environment everywhere.”
