Porsche takes wraps off new 919 LMP1 Hybrid, first race next month at Silverstone

Porsche has finally taken the wraps off its long-awaited Le Mans prototype hybrid, using this week’s 2014 Geneva Motor Show as the launching pad for what could prove to be a very formidable newcomer for the 2014 World Endurance Championship.

The 2014 Porsche 919 Hybrid will compete in the WEC’s LMP1 class, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Porsche is a 16-time winner at Le Mans.

Similar mechanically to the 918 Spyder supercar, the 919 Hybrid was designed from the ground up to adhere to new WEC regulations to maximize energy consumption efficiency, including using a system of recovering thermal energy from exhaust gases similar to what is being used in Formula One.

And yet even with all of the new changes, the new Porsche turns out nearly 500 horsepower from a direct-injected and turbocharged V-4 motor.

Porsche will campaign two 919 Hybrids in the WEC, with Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb in the No. 14 car and Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber in the No. 20.

The season’s first race will be the Six Hours at Silverstone (U.K.) on April 20.
