Caterham calls on Frijns for Friday practice in Bahrain

After getting both Kamui Kobayashi and Marcus Ericsson home in Malaysia, Caterham has decided to hand Kobayashi’s CT05 to its reserve driver, Robin Frijns, for FP1 on Friday at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The 22-year-old Dutchman, a former champion of the Formula Renault 3.5 series, will be making his first-ever Grand Prix appearance and will be one of two competitors from the Netherlands to take part in this weekend’s festivities; ex-Caterham man Giedo van der Garde will drive in FP1 for Sauber.

Frijns got acquainted with Caterham’s 2014 challenger during this year’s round of preseason testing (pictured).

“I’m excited about being back in the car for my first FP1 of the 2014 season with Caterham, especially as I already have experience of the car at Bahrain from the day I did in the pre-season tests,” he said in a release.

“It’ll be interesting to see how much progress we’ve made across the whole car since I last drove it, but my focus will be on helping the team prepare for the race weekend, something I know I can add value to, assuming we have a problem-free session.”

Frijns will also be a part of Caterham’s tire test with Pirelli at Bahrain next Tuesday, just a few days after the Grand Prix. He added that he wants to show strong there as well.

“Obviously [testing is] a different proposition to an FP1 – quite a lot less pressure, more time on track and a much bigger runplan, but it’s still really important to approach that day with the same focus and determination to do as well as I can for the team.

“It’s another chance for me to continue to learn as much as I can about operating efficiently with the team on track, building on the work I’ve been doing with them in the simulator back at Leafield, and I can’t wait to get back to work.”

Audi bids farewell to Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich upon retirement

Audi bid farewell to its iconic head of motorsport, Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, at its end-of-season ‘Race Night’ event in Germany on Friday upon his retirement.

Ullrich took over the reins as Audi’s head of motorsport in 1993 and stayed in the role for 23 years, overseeing its arrival in the prototype class of sports car racing and domination of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Ullrich stepped down from the position at the end of 2016, handing the reins over to ex-Audi DTM chief Dieter Gass, and attended his final racing event with the German marque at its first works Formula E outing in Hong Kong earlier this month.

Ullrich was honored at the Race Night event on Friday and thanked for his efforts in developing Audi into a force within global motorsport.

“In 566 factory-backed commitments during this period he celebrated 209 victories, 13 of them in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, eleven in the 12-hour race at Sebring and nine in the ‘Petit Le Mans’ at Road Atlanta,” a piece on Ullrich’s tenure for Audi’s website reads.

“31 driver titles in super touring car racing, in the DTM and in the sports prototype category are credited to him. 57 campaigners were Audi factory drivers during Wolfgang Ullrich’s era and he was responsible for 18 new developments of racing cars – an impressive tally.”
