The Barber Vintage Motorcycle Museum on the grounds of the Barber Motorsports Park complex outside Birmingham, Alabama has now achieved world-record status.

Before this weekend’s Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama got rolling along, Guinness World Records officially certified the BVMM as the world’s largest motorcycle museum.

The museum opened in 1995 in the city of Birmingham, but moved to Barber Motorsports Park in 2003 and now holds more than 1,200 vintage and modern cycles plus a sizable collection of race cars from Lotus and other brands.

Track creator and owner George Barber is hopeful that the Guinness certification can help bring even more visitors to his museum and to his town.

“It’s got to bring some positive vibes to the city,” Barber said to AL.com. “I want to use it as a tool to help bring more people to Birmingham.”

His team has been working on attaining Guinness certification for the museum over the last six months, and as it turns out, the museum has managed to attain it as a new record category.

“Guinness World Records is always open to new record categories and we are happy to approve this achievement,” Guinness spokesperson Sara Wilcox added.

NBC’s Birmingham affiliate, Alabama’s 13, recently ran a two-part profile on Mr. Barber as part of its Spirit of Alabama series. Here’s Part One, followed by Part Two.
