As the eyes of the Formula 1 world turned to Jules Bianchi and Marussia after their ninth place finish in the Monaco Grand Prix yesterday, the fact that Marcus Ericsson had equalled Caterham’s best ever result in just his sixth grand prix went largely unnoticed.
Ever since both teams made their debut in 2010, Marussia and Caterham have largely remained neck and neck. Neither has ever looked capable of scoring any points, but today, a race of attrition gave the Anglo-Russian team an opportunity. Bianchi, with a stunning drive, seized it with both hands.
With 11th place though, Marcus Ericsson came agonizingly close to scoring Caterham’s first ever points. However, the result did see him match the team’s best ever finish at the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.
“For me that was good, even though the whole team is obviously disappointed about the way it ended,” Ericsson said after the race.
“It was an amazing experience finishing my first Monaco Grand Prix and the fact we’ve equalled the team’s best ever finish today is great, it’s just a shame it didn’t mean more after the fantastic job everyone did today.”
His feat may have been overshadowed by Bianchi, but with a slice of luck, it could have been so, so different for the Malaysian team.
