Moto GP: Marquez storms to seventh straight pole at Mugello

Marc Marquez has continued his perfect start to the 2014 Moto GP season by claiming his seventh straight pole position at Mugello today.

The Spaniard became the youngest ever motorcycle world champion last year, and the first rookie to win the title since Kenny Roberts in 1978. Judging by his perfect start to the 2014 season, where he was won all five races so far from pole position, he looks set to go back-to-back, but more records could tumble.

Marquez edged out Andrea Iannone by 0.180 seconds at Mugello today to continue his streak of pole positions, which stretches back to the final round of last season at Valencia. Jorge Lorenzo qualified in third place ahead of Marquez’s Honda teammate, Dani Pedrosa.

This weekend’s race in Mugello marks six-time Moto GP champion Valentino Rossi’s 300th grand prix start, but he will start the race from down in 10th place.

Mercedes might be dominating Formula 1 at the moment, but in terms of a single person trouncing the rest of the field week in, week out, there are few on the same level as Marquez. At the age of just 21, he has a long and record-breaking career ahead of him.
