An accidental shooting over the weekend in Florida claimed the life of a grandson of Chip Ganassi Racing co-owner Felix Sabates (pictured, right, with Ganassi).
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel has relayed the findings of a Palm Beach Gardens police report on the incident.
The report says it took place during a party in which a group of friends were playing with a 9mm pistol while drinking and doing drugs.
An unnamed 17-year-old pointed the gun at multiple people inside the apartment before pointing it at 18-year-old Feliciano “Chany” Sabates.
The gun then went off, and Sabates was hit in the chest by the round. Sabates died at the scene.
The shooter now faces a charge of manslaughter by culpable negligence.
“The information and physical evidence was consistent that this was a careless act rather than an intentional act, thus the manslaughter by culpable negligence charge,” police spokesman Commander William Brandt said per the Sun-Sentinel.
After the shooting, some of the party goers attempted to hide the gun in nearby bushes according to police. However, they ultimately led police to the weapon after being interviewed by detectives.
Felix’s daughter, Mimi, has posted the following on her Twitter account:
We give our condolences to the Sabates family at this time…
