Gordon’s power problem opens door for Dale Jr. to take Sprint Cup points lead


Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s 11th-place finish in today’s Cheez-it 355 at Watkins Glen International enabled him to take over the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship lead.

Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon entered this weekend’s race with a 17-point lead over Earnhardt. But after leading the first 29 laps of today’s 90-lapper, Gordon suffered a loss of power on his car at Lap 50.

Gordon was pushed to his pit box and after his crew made repairs, he was able to return to the track and eventually finished in 34th.

With that, Earnhardt leaves the Glen with a five-point lead over Gordon with four regular season races left.

Earnhardt cycled up to second behind HMS teammate and then-leader Jimmie Johnson by staying out under the Gordon caution.

Following the extended red flag at Lap 57, Earnhardt made a stop for four tires and fuel, which dropped him out of the Top 20. However, after the green flag came back out at Lap 60, he was able to start a late-race move towards the Top 10.

With less than 10 laps to go, Earnhardt finally returned to that bracket of the leaderboard. But two restarts within the final laps ultimately saw him drop back to his final result.

“The strategy bit us there,” Earnhardt said. “We probably should of come. [Crew chief] Steve [Letarte] and I think we probably should have come and got tires there.

“That last stop, a couple of guys on new tires beat us. We had a good fast car, real good speed – just got caught out on that strategy there and didn’t finish in the top five. We had a good enough car to.”

Meanwhile, Gordon said that he didn’t know the exact cause of what caused his car to lose power.

“It looks like we had a battery go dead, two batteries go dead,” Gordon said. “I didn’t see anything on the volts meter that stood out or anything really going on there that was alarming.”

However, Gordon was glad that such a problem occurred now than later on when it counts.

“…I would rather these things happen now so we can determine what caused it and make sure it doesn’t happen again, because you can’t have those kinds of things happen once this Chase starts,” Gordon said.

Porsche extended its streak of pole positions in the FIA World Endurance Championship to nine races by locking out the front row of the grid for the 6 Hours of Fuji on Saturday.

Sharing qualifying duties in the no. 17 Porsche 919 Hybrid, Mark Webber and Timo Bernhard posted a two-lap average of 1:22.763 seconds to give the German marque pole position at Fuji Speedway.

Yet again, it was the sister no. 18 Porsche of Marc Lieb, Neel Jani and Romain Dumas that put up the most stringent challenge, but fell three-tenths of a second short at the end of the LMP qualifying session.

Audi put up more of a fight to the Porsches this time around as both of its R18 e-tron quattros finished within half a second of the no. 17’s time. The no. 7 of Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer will start third ahead of Lucas di Grassi, Loic Duval and Oliver Jarvis in the no 8.

Toyota endured another fairly routine qualifying en route to P5 and P6 as the TS 040 Hybrid car struggles to keep up with its rivals, beating only the Rebellion and ByKolles runners in LMP1.

In LMP2, G-Drive continued its dominant streak by finishing first and second in class. Sam Bird, Roman Rusinov and Julien Canal will start from pole tomorrow ahead of Gustavo Yacaman, Luis Felipe Derani and Ricardo Gonzalez in the sister car.

AF Corse bounced back from a difficult race in Austin to finish first and second in GTE Pro qualifying, led by the no. 71 of James Calado and Davide Rigon. Toni Vilander and Gianmaria Bruni will start just behind in P2 ahead of the no. 99 Aston Martin Racing entry.

Ferrari’s strong form carried over into GTE Am as well as the SMP Racing F458 Italia took class pole, finishing three-tenths clear of the no. 98 AMR Vantage.

Sainz uninjured, but to remain in hospital overnight

Carlos Sainz Jr. will remain in hospital overnight following a terrifying crash during practice for the Russian Grand Prix on Saturday morning.

Sainz slammed into the wall at turn 13 after losing control of his car, pitching in underneath the TecPro barrier at the end of the run-off area.

Medical crews spent 20 minutes extricating Sainz from his car due to the barriers’ placement before he was taken away to hospital for a check-up.

Sainz tweeted a picture to his followers confirming that he was okay, and Toro Rosso has now released a second statement confirming that the Spaniard was fully conscious throughout the crash and is uninjured.

“After arriving at the Sochi Hospital 4, Carlos Sainz, who never lost consciousness, underwent a medical examination, including a full body scan,” the statement reads. “The scan showed that the driver has no injuries.

“However, he will be staying in the hospital overnight as a precautionary measure, which is the normal procedure in these circumstances.

“We will release further information when it is available.”

Sainz tweeted that he was hoping to convince the doctors to release him from hospital early enough so that he could take part in tomorrow’s race, but any steps taken will be with his well-being in mind.
