IndyCar: Ganassi team has better qualifying in search of second straight win

WEST ALLIS, Wis. – Poised to play spoilers and perhaps, in Scott Dixon’s case, sneak into championship contention, the Chip Ganassi Racing team enjoyed a banner qualifying day while prior practice pacesetters Andretti Autosport struggled at The Milwaukee Mile.

Team Penske has two of the top three spots on the grid for Sunday’s ABC Supply Co. Wisconsin 250 at Milwaukee IndyFest Presented by the Metro Milwaukee Honda Dealers (3 p.m. ET, NBCSN), but Ganassi has three of the top six. Interestingly, only Dixon in 11th starts outside that top half-dozen.

Tony Kanaan nearly captured the pole but for a lift in Turns 1 and 2, that was enough to send his Huggies-backed No. 10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet to second on the grid.

“I tried to go flat through 1-2 and got greedy; it was about Tony Kanaan being too greedy,” Kanaan said post-qualifying, while dropping a rare mention of himself in the third person.

“I had to try it. I’d be bragging if I did. Not a bad qualifying. We should be top five.”

Kanaan is, and on the strength of leading 325 laps in the last two oval races at Iowa (247) and Pocono (78), is primed to capture his first win of the year on Sunday.

“We’re no different than Iowa, so that tells you where we’re at. But we’ll still need a clean day,” Kanaan said.

“We did some long runs this afternoon. Pretty pleased. We have a good car, but it means nothing actually. We didn’t lead the right laps at Iowa.”

The NTT Data and Novo Nordisk-backed entries of Ryan Briscoe and Charlie Kimball qualified fourth and sixth, respectively. Briscoe is a prior Milwaukee race winner and polesitter, but Kimball had never qualified better than 18th in three prior Milwaukee starts.

“On Lap 1 in first practice I was pretty fast, then we made some changes and lost it. So then we were conservative and went back to that,” Briscoe said. “It was the safe thing to do.

“I squeezed 90 percent out of it. To go from a 22.9 (second lap) last session to 21.6 is a big jump.”

Added Kimball, who estimated he’d got 90-95 percent out of the car, “We got pretty close. There’s still some things I learned. I had a good convo with Dario, and he was pretty solid around here. He taught me how to approach this place mentally. I had to carry that advise and experience. I got 90-95 percent of it today. More for me to learn. We’ll do better tomorrow.”

Oddly it’s Dixon, in 11th, who went out last and by all rights could have snatched the pole from Will Power, but wasn’t able to hit the balance. But considering he started dead last, 22nd, and won last race at Mid-Ohio, starting from half that distance should make things a bit simpler.

For the team, which hadn’t won all season until Dixon last race, it now has an excellent shot at two-in-a-row.

Formula One: Recapping the past week’s news

While the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is still two months away from beginning its 2018 season, this past week did bring about news items that filled out the 2018 grid and shed some light on individual team and car launches as the season-opening Australian Grand Prix draws closer.

Williams Signs Sirotkin for 2018 Drive, Names Kubica as Reserve Driver

The saga of the second seat at Williams Martini Racing was finally resolved early on in the week, with former Renault Sport F1 Team test driver Sergey Sirotkin officially confirmed as a teammate to the incumbent Lance Stroll in 2018.

The announcement concluded months of speculation that saw multiple drivers test for the team in an auditioning capacity. Most notably, Robert Kubica looked to be a main contender for the seat before Sirotkin emerged as the favorite.

However, Kubica, who has not raced in Formula 1 since a devastating rally accident in 2011 left him with brutal injuries to his right arm, was named as a reserve and development driver for the team.

This announcement also completes the 2018 Formula 1 driver lineup, with all 11 teams having their seats now filled. Among those who were left without F1 drives are Paul Di Resta, who drove for Williams at the Hungarian Grand Prix in relief of Felipe Massa and even tested with them during the Winter months, and Antonio Giovinazzi, who filled in for Pascal Wehrlein at the Australian and Chinese Grands Prix.

Former Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso driver Daniil Kvyat is also without a race seat for 2018, but did sign on with Scuderia Ferrari as a development driver.

Mercedes, McLaren Reveal Dates for Their 2018 Car Launches

While most teams have not yet released dates for when their 2018 cars will be publicly launched, three notables have.

Mercedes AMG Petronas will introduce its 2018 challenger on February 22nd, the same day Ferrari is doing so, while McLaren will unveil its car one day later on the 23rd.

Testing will commence on February 26th at Circuit de Catalunya.
