2015 Formula Renault 3.5 champion Oliver Rowland has joined MP Motorsport for the 2016 GP2 Series season.

Rowland, 23, made his GP2 debut last year at Silverstone and took part in select rounds while focusing on FR3.5, where he won the title in record-breaking fashion.

Rowland will now race in GP2 full-time with Dutch team MP Motorsport, having been named as a member of the new Renault Sport Academy on Wednesday.

“Having worked and lived with the MP Motorsport guys in the Netherlands throughout my second year in Eurocup, we developed a really strong relationship which I hope we can capitalise on in GP2 this year,” Rowland said.

“We quickly re-established that productive partnership with a half decent debut at Silverstone last July. So I hope we can start where we left off and make a strong impression in the paddock in 2016.”

Rowland is joined on the Renault Sport Academy by fellow young drivers Jack Aitken, Kevin Joerg and Louis Deletraz.

“The Renault Sport Academy underlines the commitment of Renault Sport Racing to nurture young talent to develop the Formula 1 stars of the future,” Frederic Vasseur, racing director of Renault Sport Racing, said.

“The motivation is not just altruistic; we want these drivers to become future Formula One World Champions and we are putting every tool at their disposal to achieve this aim.”
