Mick Schumacher, the son of Formula 1 legend Michael, won his debut Italian Formula 4 race at Misano from pole position on Saturday.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Schumacher Jr. would race in both the German and Italian F4 championships in 2016 with Prema Powerteam.

Schumacher raced in the German ADAC F4 series last season, claiming one race win en route to 10th place in the final drivers’ standings.

Schumacher kicked off his second season in single seaters by taking pole position at Misano for the Italian F4 opener on Saturday.

The German dropped to second off the line as Jenzer Motorsport driver Marcos Siebert charged into the lead, but moved back into first place on lap four.

Schumacher led the remainder of the race to record a debut victory in the Italian championship, finishing 2.7 seconds clear of the field after 17 laps.

He then repeated the feat in the second race of the weekend, controlling from the front in wet conditions before crossing the line three seconds ahead of Job van Uitert.

Schumacher will chase a hat-trick of victories on Sunday at Misano before turning his attention to the first race of the German F4 season at Oschersleben next weekend.

Also making his Italian F4 debut at Misano was 16-year-old American racer Jaden Conwright, who finished 19th in the first race of the weekend.
