Formula E has confirmed that its upcoming race in Berlin will move back to its season one venue of the Tempelhof Airport this year.
The Tempelhof Airport was notable for its role in the Berlin Air Lift as the allied powers kept the west of the city functioning at the start of the Cold War.
Tempelhof was turned into a public park in 2008 and hosted Berlin’s first Formula E race in the summer of 2015.
The series was unable to return to Tempelhof for its second season after the site became a refugee camp for those fleeing troubles in the Middle East, prompting the race to move to a more central location.
City officials voted against Formula E returning to Karl-Marx-Allee in the heart of Berlin for season three, prompting the series to look into alternative options, including a return to Tempelhof.
On Friday, Formula E confirmed that the race would be going ahead as planned later this year at Tempelhof once again.
“Motorsport with electric motors is an advertisement for innovative technologies and sustainable urban mobility,” governing mayor of Berlin Michael Müller said.
“Electromobility is the key to environmentally friendly transport in the cities of the 21st century, including Berlin.
“I am therefore delighted that Formula E continues to take place here. The event thrills motorsport fans and proves - in a spectacular way, in front of a special backdrop - the performance of this technology to a wide audience.”
The Berlin ePrix will take place on June 10.
