Simon Pagenaud, Graham Rahal crash on first lap of Long Beach Grand Prix

On the opening lap of today’s Long Beach Grand Prix, Simon Pagenaud was tagged from behind by Graham Rahal as they headed into turn one on the 11-turn, 1.968-mile temporary street course.

Pagenaud was sent spinning upon impact with heavy damage to the rear suspension. He stated in an interview with NBCSN that he believed the damage could be repaired if the car could get back to pit road, but given the configuration of the street course, that will not be possible.

Rahal’s car did not appear to suffer any significant damage and he continued on. He was assessed a drive-through penalty for causing the incident.

Ryan Hunter-Reay also suffered damage to his front wing when he clipped the rear of Scott Dixon’s car as they tried to avoid the Rahal-Pagenaud incident. Hunter-Reay was forced to pit to have his wing replaced.
