The first NASCAR national series race on dirt in more than 40 years — the Camping World Truck Series’ “Midsummer Classic” at Eldora Speedway on July 24 — will feature a special qualifying and race format.
Let’s start with the matter of creating the field for the event. A traditional two-lap qualifying session will set the grid for five qualifying races that will run for eight laps each (only green flag laps will count). From each of these heats, five trucks will advance into the feature.
Four more positions in the 30-truck field will then be up for grabs in a 15-lap “last chance” qualifier (again, only green flag laps will count), and the final position, No. 30, will be given to the most recent past CWTS champion that had not already qualified (or, if there isn’t one, the next highest-finishing driver in the “last chance” race).
This all leads to the 150-lap main event, which will be split into three segments of 60, 50, and 40 laps each. Pit stops will take place between each of the segments.
“NASCAR and Eldora Speedway have collectively worked together to come up with a format that embraces the history of dirt track racing while also ensuring that full-time competitors have an opportunity to be a part of this special event,” said NASCAR Camping World Truck Series director Chad Little in a statement.
“This will also add an exciting element for the fans and we look forward to putting on a great show at this unique venue.”
