For the fourth consecutive race this season, the FIA has experienced a failure with the new telemetry system, which will limit the information available to drivers during the race.
The sport’s governing body opted to change its telemetry supplier at the end of last season, and this has caused many problems for the teams. Before, drivers would be alerted when under yellow flag conditions, and during a safety car period their speed would be limited. However, the teams have been forced to issue information manually during the first three races.
These failures were particularly obvious in China, where eight drivers were called to the stewards’ office for using DRS under yellow flag conditions. However, no penalties were awarded as the infringements would have been prevented had the telemetry been working properly.
Charlie Whiting has informed Autosport that the marshalling lights and GPS system is now working, but the issues are still severe enough for the race control telemetry to be disabled once again.
NBC’s Will Buxton has suggested that the teams may go back to the 2012 system for the next race in Spain.
“I have it on good authority teams will revert to 2012 spec for Spain,” Buxton said on Twitter.
