The official title of Sunday’s IZOD IndyCar Series race in Detroit is the Chevrolet Indy Dual at Detroit presented by Quicken Loans Dual 2. The unofficial title is the Chevrolet and Honda Indy Demolition Derby in Detroit.
Six caution flags flew in the first 40 laps as drivers couldn’t keep off the concrete barriers lining The Raceway on Belle Isle.
Contact occurred on lap 1 (AJ Allmendinger, for the second time in as many days, at Turn 2), lap 8 (Simona de Silvestro, Turn 8, pictured), Lap 14 (Alex Tagliani and Josef Newgarden with issues at two different spots on the track), Lap 20 (debris from other accidents), Lap 24 (Takuma Sato, Turn 3) and Lap 27 (a multiple car pileup at Turn 1, triggered by Sebastien Bourdais).
The most memorable quote in this stretch? Team Penske’s Will Power to ABC TV on Bourdais: “Bourdais once was a champ, now he’s a chump.” Power returned to the track after the contact.
Tony Kanaan led at half distance, but Dual 1 winner and Dual 2 polesitter Mike Conway has again had the dominant car. He and Scott Dixon were last to pit on the first pit stop sequence, and have cycled back to the top three.
Cars that have had issues at some point or another include: Josef Newgarden, E.J. Viso, Ryan Hunter-Reay, James Hinchcliffe, Will Power, Alex Tagliani, Justin Wilson, Takuma Sato, Simona de Silvestro and AJ Allmendinger.
