Mercedes called before FIA tribunal; Ferrari acquitted

The tire test row over Mercedes’ secret test in Spain (Barcelona, May 15-17) has now carried over to the FIA. As a result, Mercedes has been called before the FIA International Tribunal to determine whether its test was a breach of FIA rules.

The FIA deemed it needed further clarification regarding the reasoning and rationale for the test. The full release by the FIA is linked here.

Ferrari, meanwhile, was let off the hook after its own test carried out in Barcelona (April 23-24) wasn’t a violation of rules, because it was conducted using a 2011 car.

This controversy has several elements of intrigue. Marc Priestley, a former McLaren mechanic and occasional contributor to MotorSportsTalk, has said Mercedes will have “gained tremendously” from the test. My MST colleague Luke Smith noted how this is likely to become the talking point of the summer. Pirelli has claimed Mercedes “gained nothing” from the test.
