In-season testing looks set to return to Formula One next season after the Sporting Working Group approved four test periods at this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.
In the wake of the tiregate scandal, there has been increased pressure on the FIA to re-introduce in-season testing, which had been banned to reduce costs. However, according to jamesallenonf1.com, this will be offset by new aerodynamic regulations which will save teams money. Many had feared that in-season testing would only aid the teams with larger budgets, yet this incentive appears to have been welcomed by all corners of the paddock.
Additionally, the Young Driver Tests will be scrapped, having been held since 2009 in order to give up-and-coming drivers a chance to impress their teams. Instead, teams will be able to use their race drivers in testing (should they choose to) in order to receive more meaningful feedback.
The calendar is also set to expand to 21 races thanks to the addition of grands prix in New Jersey and Russia, but this could fall back to 20 should the Korean Grand Prix be dropped due to financial troubles.
The Canadian Grand Prix has traditionally been one of the first races where the foundations for the following season are laid, and it appears that 2013 is no different.
