Bobby Labonte’s impressive streak of 703 consecutive Sprint Cup starts will still be intact, as the former Cup champion will drive the No. 51 Chevrolet for Phoenix Racing this coming weekend at Michigan International Speedway.
A.J. Allmendinger has taken over for Labonte in the No. 47 JTG/Daugherty Racing Toyota for the Quicken Loans 400. ‘Dinger had already run select Cup races this season in Phoenix’s No. 51 car, but may run up to five events for JTG/Daugherty starting with this weekend’s run in Michigan’s Irish Hills.
“Bobby came and helped us out a few years ago when we were trying to get our Sprint Cup program up and running,” Phoenix crew chief Nick Harrison said to FoxSports.com’s Lee Spencer. “Now [team owner] James [Finch] wants to return the favor. We know Bobby will do a great job for us this weekend.”
Labonte has won three times at Michigan in his Cup career but not since 1999, when he was with Joe Gibbs Racing. His best finish so far this season with JTG/Daugherty was a 15th-place showing in the season-opening Daytona 500.
