Pirelli have confirmed the tire compounds which will be brought to the British, German and Hungarian Grands Prix, following the confirmation that their new design would not be used after the idea was voted down by the eleven F1 teams.
The compounds used will be as follows:
- British Grand Prix: Medium (option); Hard (prime)
- German Grand Prix: Soft (option); Medium (prime)
- Hungarian Grand Prix: Medium (option); Hard (prime)
The races at Silverstone and the Hungaroring are traditionally very hard on tires, reasoning Pirelli’s decision to take their hardest compounds to the events. Also, it is likely that the decision has been influenced by the pressure placed on the sport’s tire supplier to reduce the number of pit stops, with the more durable tires being used. This was thought to be part of the reason behind the design of the new tires, which will now not be used this season.
The big question entering the second half of the European season is whether Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull can extend their championship leads ahead of the Asian leg of the F1 circus – a period which was particularly fruitful for the defending world champion in 2012. Taming the Pirelli tires will be key if Red Bull are to put themselves in a position to seal both titles ahead of the final round in Brazil, although it is unlikely that the team is contemplating such an easy ride.
