Word from Bernie Ecclestone this morning was that Formula One Management (FOM) cameramen would work behind the pit wall for future Grands Prix after Mark Webber’s pit incident at the German Grand Prix.
Later Tuesday, the FIA has taken that a step further by instituting a ban on all non-essential personnel during F1 races and qualifying sessions.
In a release, the FIA said the only personnel allowed in pit lane proper will be team members and event marshals. Approved media will only have access to the pit wall.
Two changes planned for the new 2014 FIA regulations (linked here; post to come later Tuesday) will be bumped up to be introduced immediately. They read as follows:
1) Article 23.11*, which will now require all team personnel working on a car during a pit stop to wear head protection.
2) Article 30.12**, which will provide for a reduction of the pit lane speed limit during races from 100km/h to 80km/h (with the exception of Melbourne, Monaco and Singapore, where due to track configuration the limit remains at 60km/h).

Much would need to be worked out, starting with how much garage and grandstand access would be afforded for a 2021 season opener that likely would occur during a still ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Having rubbed shoulders with other racing greats so often, it only would be fitting if Hamilton — who is one victory from tying Michael Schumacher’s career record and also could tie the F1 record with a seventh championship this season — spent some time with the greatest basketball player of all time.
