INDYCAR announced Thursday that twin-turbocharged engines will be mandated from 2014. This impacts Honda, which opted for a single turbo layout and design from Honda Performance Development, when new engine regulations for 2.2L V6 were introduced prior to 2012.
“In an effort for parity throughout the turbocharger range, mandating only a twin turbo system simplifies our efforts to ensure even closer competition,” INDYCAR president of competition and operations Derrick Walker said in a statement. “Both manufacturers displayed a willingness to use a common turbo spec for 2014, so it made sense to mandate a twin turbocharger that maintains the performance we’ve come to expect while keeping the technology relevant to the automotive industry.”
With “Turbo” the film now in theaters, I guess this is another way to keep turbos in the news. Except this time, it’s the actual BorgWarner produced items.
