To almost no-one’s surprise after his test with the team on Wednesday, Luca Filippi has been confirmed to make his IZOD IndyCar Series debut this weekend with the Barracuda Racing team.
The Italian is the second driver who will make his debut this weekend, along with James Davison of Dale Coyne Racing.
One of GP2’s most experienced ever drivers, Filippi was linked to a ride with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in 2012 before funding failed to materialize.
“I’m very grateful to the Barracuda Racing team for this great opportunity because this is what I’ve been waiting for my whole life,” said Filippi in a release. “I’m really looking forward to the weekend. It was very good that we had an open test and I had a chance to work with the crew and engineers. I think we worked well together and they really looked after me.”
At the moment the confirmation is for this race only in the No. 98 Barracuda Honda. Alex Tagliani drove the opening 13 races of the season.
