Montoya: Winning is everything from here

Juan Pablo Montoya’s first interview since it was announced he wouldn’t be back for Chip Ganassi Racing’s NASCAR team in 2014 went to Autoweek motorsports editor Mac Morrison. Whatever it is Montoya races next, he wants to be back winning races – something he did with frequency for Ganassi in CART, and sporadically with Williams and McLaren in Formula One.

“But what I told everybody is, whatever I want to do, it’s gotta be in a car to win races. You need to be in a winning car, that’s the No. 1 thought for me right now. What am I gonna do? I dunno. You know, one side of me of course wants to stay in NASCAR, I’ve put a lot of effort and time into it. But the No. 1 thing for me is being in a winning car,” Montoya said.

Montoya added that he’d be “looking at everything” when it comes to options. NASCAR still remains of interest and though it’s been seven years since his in-season departure from McLaren, open-wheels might still hold a candle, but is far less likely.

In sporadic GRAND-AM Rolex Series appearances, Montoya has created some fireworks with a lot of contact and a fierce aggression when battling other cars.  A Daytona Prototype landing spot for him makes a lot of sense.
