In what’s hardly a surprise, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has confirmed the IndyCar Series will have a road race in the month of May next year.
The race was approved by the IMS Board of Directors today, Sept. 26, and comes after an exploratory test to examine potential course layouts earlier this month.
The date was not confirmed but it is expected to be the opening weekend of the month of May, with the race likely Saturday, May 10, per several media reports. Further details about the event will be revealed at a media event Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Speedway.
“This event will bring even more energy and action to the Month of May for fans and create another showcase for the diversity and excitement of the Speedway and the IndyCar Series,” Hulman & Company Chief Executive Officer Mark Miles said in a statement. “The new road race will further enhance the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the premier motorsports destination in the world and direct an even brighter spotlight on the Indianapolis 500.”
