Esteban Gutierrez and Max Chilton have both received penalties for indiscretions during today’s qualifying session for the United States Grand Prix (live on NBC from 1pm ET on Sunday).
Gutierrez was accused of impeding Pastor Maldonado’s flying lap during the first qualifying session on Saturday, cutting across the Williams at the final corner and forcing the Venezuelan driver to take evasive action. It was a rookie error by Gutierrez, and the stewards deemed it severe enough to hand him a ten place grid penalty for the race tomorrow. After qualifying in tenth place, the Mexican driver will start in P20.
Chilton was called to the stewards on two counts of blocking other drivers, forcing Adrian Sutil to slow down during his flying lap as the Force India driver also dropped out in Q1. The Marussia driver claimed that he did not think that he had done anything wrong, but the stewards thought otherwise and slapped him with a pre-race drive through penalty. As a result, Chilton will have to serve his drive through during the first five laps of the race tomorrow.
The only other grid change is Charles Pic’s five place grid drop after a gearbox change that means he will start in last place.
We will post a final grid for the race tomorrow morning ahead of the race.
