Sutil: I ran out of luck this weekend

Adrian Sutil has lamented his bad luck after an incident on the first lap of the race saw him crash out and finish his United States Grand Prix weekend in the barrier at the Circuit of the Americas today.

Sutil made contact with Williams’ Pastor Maldonado whilst heading down the straight to turn twelve, spearing to the left and into the barrier at some speed. He emerged from his car unscathed, but the accident was big enough to warrant the deployment of the safety car for four laps.

“It feels like I ran out of luck this weekend,” Sutil said. “Up until Saturday morning I was looking competitive and was happy with the car, but all of that promise disappeared with the problems we had in qualifying.

“In the race I made a good start, gained a few positions and was racing ahead of Maldonado on the back straight. For some reason he hit my left rear wheel and I immediately lost control of the car and crashed into the barriers. I donโ€™t really understand why he was so close to me because the track is so wide there. I stayed on my line and there was a lot of space to the right and the left. So it was an early finish and a very disappointing day.”

Currently without a drive for 2014, Sutil will be hoping to finish the season in style in Brazil next weekend in order to secure himself a place with Force India next year.

Fabio Quartararo won the Catalan Grand Prix, recapturing the MotoGP points lead and his championship momentum Sunday with his third victory of the season.

Quartararo, who opened the season with his first two career victories in the premier series, took his first checkered flag in two months by winning at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya aboard his Petronas Yamaha SRT.

The French rider opened an eight-point lead (108-100) over Joan Mir, who finished second Sunday. Alex Rins was third.

After winning the previous race, Maverick Vinales slipped to 18 points behind Quartararo after a ninth-place finish.

Andrea Dovizioso was the points leader entering the race but crashed his Ducati in the second turn and placed last. Dovizioso fell three spots to fourth in the championship rankings, 24 points behind Fabio Quartararo in MotoGP.
