Sauber test driver Sergey Sirotkin will race after all in 2014, perhaps in a formula better suited for him to continue learning and developing instead of the rigors of Formula One.
The 18-year-old Russian will have another season in Formula Renault 3.5, and will race with the Fortec Motorsport team. He has already tested two days for the team at Motorland Aragon in Spain.
“Let me firstly thanks all in Fortec for the great opportunity they offered to me,” Sirotkin said in a team release. “During the test run together in Spain, I had an immediate great feeling with all the people there. It was a difficult December, with many important decision for my career; now that the full program have been finalized, I am finally free to dedicate all my energies to the coming season.”
Sirotkin was mooted as a potential 2014 race driver for Sauber as part of a Russian investment package. The team adds Adrian Sutil from Force India and retains Esteban Gutierrez for a second season as its race drivers.
