Report: IMS will add a vintage race in June 2014

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is committed to improving its bottom line in 2014, and there’s hard evidence already of that given the announcement of IndyCar’s Grand Prix of Indianapolis road race May 10 as a new, potentially lucrative event.

That takes care of the present, and on Monday, a link was discovered that will see IMS embrace the past.

A post on the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association, or SVRA, website revealed that IMS will host an SVRA Vintage race in June 2014 on the newly reconfigured 2.44-mile road course. For all the history that exists about IMS, this will actually be the first ever vintage race at the iconic speedway on 16th and Georgetown. To boot, fans will be able to camp in the infield.

Perhaps the days of old, when roadsters ruled the Speedway and the Snake Pit was hopping aren’t as far removed as we thought.
