NHRA’s Doug Herbert making a difference for teen drivers (VIDEO)

NHRA Top Fuel racer Doug Herbert spent a good portion of his life running at more than 320 mph. But he slowed his race career when he endured the loss of sons Jon and James, in a tragic car accident in January of 2008.

Herbert’s grief led a push to create a driving program to help prevent other families from experiencing similar heartbreak by teaching young drivers more conscientious and confident skills behind the wheel. Thus the nonprofit B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe) was born.

His story is profiled by NBC Nightly News’ Janet Shamlian. More information on the organization can be found on its website, putonthebrakes.com.
