The second round of the inaugural FIA Formula E championship in Putrajaya, Malaysia recently had its track layout unveiled, and it’s definitely different from that of the opening round in Beijing.
Putrajaya’s ePrix course stretches 1.59 miles and has 12 turns. Situated near the office of the Malaysian Prime Minister, the course will feature several of the city’s landmarks, including the Ministry of Finance and the Putra Mosque.
As for the track itself, it consists of slow-to-medium speed corners, a hairpin turn, and a chicane for the first corner.
One of Formula E’s drivers, Daniel Abt of the Audi Sport Abt team, was optimistic that the layout would produce a great race.
“The track layout looks very interesting and has a lot of different corners,” he said. “You have a chicane at Turn 1 after the main straight which gives a good first opportunity for overtaking and slipstream battles. Then you have a mix of slow and medium speed corners which is good for keeping the field very tight and will ensure close racing.
“I think the next very good overtaking spot will be Turn 6 which…should give the spectators a great view of the action. Turn 9 meanwhile reminds me of the very tight hairpin at Macau. All in all, the layout looks really promising and will for sure provide great racing.
Back in March, series organizers revealed the Beijing ePrix circuit, a 2.13-mile track with 20 turns that is situated around the world-famous “Bird’s Nest” stadium, which was used in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Another Olympic venue, the “Water Cube” National Aquatics Center, is also part of the course.
The Beijing circuit is more “square” and features multiple chicanes that break up several of the straightaways. Also interesting is a U-shaped pit road that will have spectator seating inside.
