Reports: IndyCar Series expected to announce 2015 race near New Orleans

According to multiple media reports, officials of the Verizon IndyCar Series are expected to announce Monday that the series will hold a race next season in suburban New Orleans.

The race will reportedly take place on the 2.75-mile road course at NOLA Motorsports Park in suburban Avondale, La., about 15 miles from the Big Easy.

IndyCar has never raced in or near New Orleans. The IMSA series held a street race through downtown in 1995.

It’s unclear whether the series will expand its schedule to accommodate the new race, or if a race will be taken away from an existing venue. Series officials are expected to address that in a press conference scheduled at the track on Monday.

Of this season’s 18 races, 12 are on street or road courses. If reports are accurate, it would be the second straight road course added to the schedule in as many years. Indianapolis Motor Speedway was awarded and will host its first IndyCar road course race on May 10.

NOLAMP was designed by Alan Wilson, who also designed Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala., which hosted last weekend’s IndyCar race, as well as Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City.

NOLAMP opened in 2011 and has hosted a variety of smaller open-wheel series including Indy Lights, Pro Mazda and USF2000. The $60 million facility also hosted an AMA motorcycle event in 2012.
