Good mojo from last year and a good test a few weeks ago have Brian Vickers and Michael Waltrip Racing riding positive waves into New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend.
Vickers, who finished a hard-luck second at Daytona last week in the rain-shortened race, said last year’s win was a huge confidence boost considering he’d been in-and-out of the cockpit depending on health.
“To get back into a car at all was a huge accomplishment and to be in victory lane was more … it was just icing on the cake,” Vickers said Friday at NHMS.
Vickers, however, called out testing during the rest of his availability. He said multiple teams testing is a waste of resources.
“Seeing as everyone tested here, teams spent a whole lot of money. Testing, I’m not sure it’s the best use of resources,” he said. “If you test and no one else does, you’ll make gains. But when everyone tests, there’s no real advantage.”
Vickers also remained mum on MWR co-owner Rob Kauffman’s presence as chairman of the newly formed Race Teams Alliance, saying he’s waiting for further details before elaborating on how the RTA will move forward as an organization.
“We’re all waiting and seeing. There’s a lot of low hanging fruit for teams to save money on and they should, like hotel rooms and rental cars,” Vickers said. “As far as Rob being the chairman, I don’t think it has much bearing (on us).”
