Lewis Hamilton has said that he is unsure why Mercedes asked him to allow teammate Nico Rosberg past during today’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Briton managed to fight his way up into contention for the race win despite starting in the pit lane, but was put on a different strategy to Rosberg. In order to let the German maximize his pace, Hamilton was asked to allow Nico past. Lewis said that he would if the gap was small enough and stayed ahead.
When Rosberg complained, the pit wall asked Hamilton once again to let him through, but the answer was the same. Eventually, Rosberg pitted to get out of his teammate’s dirty air, and finished half a second behind Hamilton at the flag.
Speaking to NBCSN’s Will Buxton at the end of the race, the Briton said that he did not understand why he had been given the call to let Rosberg through, and is pleased to have cut the gap to the German at the top of the drivers’ championship.
