As 18-year-old Chase Elliott continues to lead the NASCAR Nationwide Series championship, talk has naturally migrated to the subject of when the son of former Sprint Cup champion Bill Elliott will ascend to NASCAR’s top level.
An official decision on Elliott’s future plans has not yet been made, but Hendrick Motorsports team owner Rick Hendrick told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio this afternoon that he expects to see the rising star in a Cup car sometime during the second half of next season.
“We haven’t arrived at a decision for sure, but I think you’ll probably see him run a few races next year,” Hendrick said to SiriusXM’s Jim Noble. “Because – before he ever won a Nationwide race, I watched him test Jimmie [Johnson’s] car and Jeff [Gordon’s] car at Nashville. Jimmie and Jeff both commented to me, ‘This kid is super smooth and super fast and he takes care of his equipment. He doesn’t get in a jam.’
“And I said before he ran a race, I would put him in the [Coca-Cola 600] at Charlotte and think he’d finish in the Top 15 or Top 10 because he’s just so smart.
“He understands the car and he just takes care of it. I think he’s gonna do a super job whenever the time comes and I think we’ll surely, probably – the second half of next year, we’ll probably see him in some races.”
After scoring his first ARCA and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series wins last year, Elliott moved up full-time this year to the NNS.
He has earned three victories so far for JR Motorsports, two of them coming in back-to-back fashion at Texas Motor Speedway and Darlington Raceway. Elliott also won last month at Chicagoland Speedway.
Those starring performances have led to some fans anticipating when he’ll make the move to Cup. But right now, he still has the business of the NNS championship to attend to.
Going into Saturday’s Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International, he leads the NNS standings by two points over JRM teammate Regan Smith. In the most recent NNS road course event at Road America, Elliott finished fourth behind winner Brendan Gaughan.
The Red Bull Racing pit crew may have already made headlines last weekend when it completed the fastest pit stop in Formula One history, changing Max Verstappen’s tires in 1.82 seconds, but the team’s most recent stunt took their skills to new heights – quite literally.
With the help of the Russian Space agency Roscomos, a group of the team’s mechanics completed the world’s first zero-gravity pit stop, on-board a IIyushin II-76K cosmonaut training plane.
Using a 2005 BR1, the team filmed the viral video over the course of a week, enduring seven flights and about 80 parabolas – periods in which the plane climbs 45 degrees before falling again at a ballistic arch of 45 degrees, creating a period of weightlessness for approximately 22 seconds.
With such a short time frame between weightlessness periods, the car and equipment had to be both quickly and safely secured before gravity once again took effect. Each filming lasted roughly 15 seconds, and the stunt was the most physically and technically demanding activity the live demo team had ever undertaken.
“It pushed us harder than I thought it would,” said Red Bull Support Team Mechanic Joe Robinson. “You realize how much you rely on gravity when you don’t have any!
“It challenges you to think and operate in a different way – and that was brilliant. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and honestly, I could have stayed and done it all month. It was amazing. I think it’s the coolest, most fun thing the Live Demo team has ever done with a show car.”
Though Red Bull was the first team to perform a pit stop in zero gravity, surprisingly Red Bull was not the first team to put a car through zero gravity. In 1999, McLaren driver David Coulthard and his car experienced zero gravity as part of a promotion for then-sponsor West Cigarettes.
