So far, Jimmie Johnson’s Sprint Cup title defense has gotten off to a quiet start. But for now, that’s probably a good thing.
After finishing 12th in the Chase opener at Chicagoland Speedway, Johnson survived last weekend’s race/demolition derby at New Hampshire Motor Speedway to finish fifth and push himself to fourth on the Chase Grid.
His mission now is to finish 24th or better in Sunday’s Challenger Round finale at Dover International Speedway to advance into the Contender Round as one of the Top 12 drivers.
But considering that he’s won a staggering nine times on Dover’s one-mile concrete oval – with the most recent of those triumphs coming just this past June – you figure that Johnson can do a heck of a lot better than 24th this weekend.
NASCAR AMERICA discussed how Johnson has managed to fly under the radar in the early stages of the post-season. You can hear what the gang has to say in the clip above.
