Another big name in the Chase has been victimized by a tire failure during today’s Contender Round opener at Kansas Speedway.
While running in the Top 5, Brad Keselowski blew a right-front tire and hit the Turn 2 wall at Lap 159.
His damage didn’t look as severe as that sustained by Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in their earlier crashes, but Keselowski nonetheless joined the two Hendrick drivers in the garage.
Bob Pockrass of the Sporting News tweeted this pic of the damaged Blanco Deuce:
Keselowski had made his way into the Contender Round via a victory in the Chase opener last month at Chicagoland Speedway.
But after finishing 36th, he now faces a major deficit going into next weekend at Charlotte. He’s now 22 points behind the eighth-place Eliminator Round cutoff at 10th on the Chase Grid.
“We blew a tire – not really sure why,” Keselowski said after the race. “We didn’t have an aggressive setup or anything in the car…It was just Russian roulette and it was our turn.”
