Simon Pagenaud’s jump to Team Penske has left his former squad, Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, without a team leader.
But is Andretti Autosport driver James Hinchcliffe about to fill that role? Or will The Mayor of Hinchtown decide to stay put at the Andretti camp?
It appears that we’ll have an answer very soon. INDYCAR public relations has revealed that a “major announcement” regarding Hinchcliffe’s future will take place tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. ET at Flat 12 Bierwerks in Indianapolis.
In case you’re wondering why Hinchcliffe’s making an announcement of this magnitude in such a setting, Flat 12 produces a beer that’s named after him – the Hinchtown Hammer Down golden ale. If you’re ever around Central Indiana, look for it. It’s worth the 10-spot for a six-pack.
Anyway, if Hinchcliffe does indeed land at SPM, that will certainly soften the team’s blow of losing a top-tier talent like Pagenaud.
The Canadian had an up-and-down 2014 but earned three race wins in 2013. He can certainly contend with the right equipment, and SPM has made impressive strides in performance with Pagenaud having carried their flag the last three years. This could be a very good match.
On the flip side, a switch for Hinchcliffe could lead to an interesting situation regarding an open seat at Andretti, one of IndyCar’s “Big 3” teams. That would certainly be a big catch for a free agent driver.
