Marussia asks for patience regarding further updates on Bianchi’s condition

Marussia has thanked the Formula 1 community for the outpouring of support following Jules Bianchi’s accident in yesterday’s Japanese Grand Prix, but has asked for patience and understanding at this difficult time.

Towards the end of yesterday’s race at Suzuka, Bianchi crashed into the recovery vehicle being used to collect Adrian Sutil’s Sauber following a spin at turn eight. He was immediately knocked unconscious, failing to respond to Marussia’s radio call.

The medical car was despatched to attend the crash site, and when the severity of Bianchi’s condition became clear, the race was red flagged.

As per the FIA, Bianchi was transported unconscious by ambulance to Mie General Hospital, where he then underwent surgery for severe head injuries. He has since been moved into the intensive care unit, where his condition will be monitored. Further details on his condition or the success of the surgery have not been released at this time.

In a statement issued today, Marussia thanked the F1 community for the support it has given the team and the Bianchi family at this difficult time, but said that it must be patient with regard to further updates.

The team statement reads:

“Following the accident involving Jules Bianchi during yesterday’s 2014 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka Circuit, the Marussia F1 Team would like to acknowledge the huge outpouring of support and affection for Jules and the Team at this very difficult time.

“With regard to the communication of information concerning Jules’ medical condition, we will respect, and be guided by, the wishes of the Bianchi family. Together with Jules’ care, they will remain our highest.

“Therefore, we would ask for patience and understanding with regard to further medical updates, which will be communicated in conjunction with the Mie General Medical Center in Yokkaichi, where Jules is being treated, when they feel it is appropriate.

“Representatives of the Marussia F1 Team and Scuderia Ferrari will remain at the hospital to support Jules and the Bianchi family.”

In a small statement, Ferrari – Bianchi’s parent team – said the following:

“In this very difficult moment the thoughts of the Scuderia and of all the Ferrari supporters are with Jules. Respecting the measures agreed by the family with the Marussia F1 Team we will not be reporting updates on his condition.”
