Ryan Newman narrowly avoided a major hit to his Chase hopes after he escaped an incident between Danica Patrick and Joey Logano that put Patrick in the wall.
With 89 laps to go, Patrick was tapped from behind by Joey Logano (already in the Eliminator Round thanks to his win last weekend at Kansas) and she spun into the Turn 4 wall.
Behind them was Newman, who went into a slide to dodge the wayward Patrick. Newman came to rest near the entrance to pit road with no damage to his No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet. He would take four tires during the ensuing caution and went back on his way.
Meanwhile, Patrick was fuming after being spun by Logano. Jeff Gluck of USA Today caught the following radio conversations:
Danica Patrick: "I'd love to go out and take him out."
Voice on radio: "Go ahead."
Uh oh, Logano.
Much would need to be worked out, starting with how much garage and grandstand access would be afforded for a 2021 season opener that likely would occur during a still ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
He was a spectator (with racing legend Mario Andretti) at four-time champion Jeff Gordon’s final Cup race as a full-time in the 2015 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. In 2011, Hamilton swapped cars with three-time champion Tony Stewart at Watkins Glen International.
Having rubbed shoulders with other racing greats so often, it would seem right for Hamilton — who is one victory from tying Michael Schumacher’s career record and also could tie the F1 record with a seventh championship this season — to spend some time with the greatest basketball player of all time.
