Ryan Newman’s fifth-place finish on Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway put him safely into the Eliminator Round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
Or so we thought, before word got out that Newman’s car failed post-race inspection after officials found it to be too low in the rear on both sides.
As of now, Newman made the Eliminator Round by a margin of 27 points over the cutoff. But could NASCAR choose to penalize him enough championship points to knock him out of the Chase?
Today on NASCAR AMERICA, USA Today writer and NASCAR on NBC contributor Nate Ryan reported that NASCAR figures to have the matter wrapped up tomorrow.
However, he also said that there are several signs beyond NASCAR’s impending decision that indicate Newman’s Chase status will not be impacted.
