Dale Earnhardt Jr. was one of three Hendrick Motorsports competitors eliminated from the Chase at the end of the Contender Round in Talladega. Only one Hendrick man, Jeff Gordon, advanced to the Eliminator Round and stayed in the battle for the Sprint Cup championship.
But late in Sunday’s Eliminator Round opener at Martinsville, both Earnhardt and Gordon stormed to the front with only a few laps to go. Earnhardt ultimately held off Gordon for the victory, but the outcome opens the possibility of Gordon being haunted by the near-miss should he fail to make the cut for the Championship Race at Homestead.
Team orders are, of course, not a foreign concept in motorsports. With that in mind, the question exists: Should Earnhardt have let Gordon take the victory in order to work toward the supposedly “greater good” – bringing another Cup title to the Hendrick camp?
Gordon, Earnhardt, their boss Rick Hendrick, and the NASCAR AMERICA gang all have their say on the subject in the clip above.
