Sebastian Vettel bounced back from a pit lane start to finish today’s United States Grand Prix in seventh position at the Circuit of The Americas.
The German driver took advantage of the safety car period to stop twice in the first two laps to ensure that he would be on the quicker option tire at the end of the race.
With five laps to go in Austin, Vettel took to the pits for his final stop, dropping from P7 to P14 and appearing to throw away any chance he had of points.
However, he put the fresh soft tires to good use to pass Daniil Kvyat, Kimi Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean, Pastor Maldonado, Jean-Eric Vergne, Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen in the last four laps to finish the race seventh, meeting his target from yesterday.
Speaking to NBCSN’s Will Buxton after the race, Vettel was less enthusiastic though, calling his performance “so-so” and saying that overtaking with fresher tires was “a bit fake”.
