They’re so close. So very, very close.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Matt Kenseth and Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards are both just one point behind Jeff Gordon for the fourth and final advance position to the Sprint Cup Championship Race going into the Eliminator Round finale Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway.
However, they’re coming to the one-mile “Desert Jewel” after strikingly different days in Texas. Late-race contact with fellow Chaser Ryan Newman helped send Kenseth to a 25th-place finish (and knocked him from the fourth-place position on the Chase Grid that Gordon now holds), while Edwards finished ninth after falling two laps down during the race.
Only a win in Phoenix will enable Kenseth and Edwards to control their Chase destiny. But while both have won there in the past (Edwards twice, Kenseth once), can one of them do it again in this most critical of times?
